D&T launches 2011 Hearst Annual Review website!

The rich web experience features 9 individual sections of multimedia content (such as Newspapers, Magazines, Television, Entertainment & Syndication, Business Media, Interactive Media, Real Estate & Other Operations) spanning Hearst's many successful properties and their accomplishments last year, including the following functionality and content:
- Video
- Quizzes
- Quote widgets
- Slideshows
- Hybrid scrollbar/slideshow widgets
- Custom scrollbars
- Animated GIFs
- Letter from the CEO translatable into 5 languages
- Print/Share functionality with Facebook, Twitter, Email sharing as well as print/download PDFs
- Full timeline with flip animation for each date across the bottom of every page
- Multiple points of navigation with smooth animation transitions from page to page
We used the CodeIgniter PHP framework version 2.1.0, HTML5, CSS3 (with 3D CSS animation for WebKit browsers), jQuery and AJAX. The website was designed to run on Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer browsers, as well as the iPad. We're proud to have worked on this project and wish Hearst another groundbreaking new year!
The screenshots below are either scrolled up or scrolled down - in some you can see the multicolor navigation at the top, and in others you can see the timeline at the bottom, but they are visible at the same time on the live site.
Chipper's Nuts: D&T developer releases new iPhone game!
Chipper’s Nuts pits one determined chipmunk against the clock - and the world!
Here's the premise: With his wife waiting back in the burrow with their chiplets (and her frying pan), stocking up on nuts is a life or death matter for Chipper. But there are squirrels out to eat those nuts, cats out to eat Chipper, and let’s not even get started on the nuclear squirrelcats. It's up to you to help Chipper gather those nuts, evade a gruesome death, and rescue his stray chiplets before time runs out.
We're always psyched to see our team doing what they love - support independent game developers and check out Chipper's Nuts! (...You'd be nuts not to). Congrats, Keith!

D&T Holiday Bonanza/Celebration/Spectacular/Box Social/Year Recap/Box Social!

D&T would like to take this time to wish everyone Happy Holidays!
We've had a great time this year using the internets and designing the future. Some of the projects we were fortunate enough to work on this year were: Club Tyson on Facebook, Zombie Trivia for iPhone, Esquire Apartment's microsite, Luna's Ugliest Carpet Contest on Facebook, Alliance for the Arts' website, Bloktonik game for iPad, Scholastic's 100 Book Countdown, and of course a bunch of iAds for Hearst Corporation including the holiday snowglobe iAd for Knob Creek in Popular Mechanics that was recently recognized as an Outstanding Ad in iMonitor!
Thank you to everyone we had the pleasure of working with this year. We hope you enjoy your holiday season as much as we've been enjoying ours!
Scholastic Books' 100 Book Countdown Site Launch!
Launching today is Scholastic Books' countdown of the 100 greatest books for kids! D&T have created an interactive bookshelf using modern CSS3 and html5. There has also been an implementation of jQuery libraries, custom javascript events, advanced tracking as well as automated revealing of the books - allowing the site to be maintained with minimal effort.
Visitors to the site can also utilize custom filters of book subjects and genres, allowing a more personalized browsing experience. D&T is excited about helping to increase awareness of these works for children as well as their families!
D&T Launches Fischer Francis Trees and Watts Website!
Fischer Francis Trees and Watts is a financial consulting firm with locations in New York, London and Singapore. Their online presence needed to be easily edited by them in order to showcase up to date strategies and techniques used by the firm in a fast paced market.
D&T designed a WordPress site at its core that has two significant editions. These editions give it more utility and accessibility than most other WordPress sites. D&T made the pages able to be categorized, as well as added a half dozen custom page templates. This allowed for the use of Timelines, Google Maps, Inline Contact Forms, Custom Contact Forms, Page Widget Implementations and Custom Video and Attachment Types.
D&T has turned a WordPress site into a self-operated, well-oiled machine!

D&T Co-Founder featured on betabeat.com!
Tom Tancredi, a co-founder of D&T, has been featured on betabeat.com - a blog directed at technology professionals, businesses and entrepreneurs. He gives insight on how he streamlines his usage of email, making the experience as un-convoluted and efficient as possible. As Tom states in the article, "I get over 150 emails a day." If you receive anywhere near this kind of volume, his tips on how to customize your email could be invaluable.
While email has become a prime medium of communication, he still admits its shortcomings and points out a philosophy that is at the core of a D&T relationship.
"Emails are no replacement for in-person or on-the-phone discussions."

Alliance For The Arts: Site Redesign
D&T has been involved with projects dealing with many types of development. From smartphone to Facebook applications, D&T revels in the chance to create and design on new platforms. However, nothing compares to a test of ability and ingenuity that brings a developer back to the basics.
How do you design an efficient and aesthetically pleasing website?
New York State Arts was both a migration from an older existing site, as well as a compilation of a still up and running site. It uses the open-source, widely popular CMS Drupal at its core. Utilizing custom content types and views, D&T transformed the site and gave it a custom and unique appearance. Custom location-based search and Google Maps implementation make it easy for users to find and navigate to locations they are interested in.
D&T launches Luna Ugliest Carpet Contest on Facebook!

We've had great feedback and response from campaigns that utilized photo uploading to Facebook for the basis of a contest. It's created online communities that are very involved with one another and the campaign. We've applied this same concept to the Luna Ugliest Carpet Contest. Contestants upload photos of carpet they want replaced, and if the community selects their carpet they win $5000 of free floors for their home!

Everyone who has "liked" the Luna Facebook page votes on the ugliest carpet up to 10 times a day and every time they vote they are entered into a drawing for a weekly $500 Luna Gift Certificate. This motivates contestants to vote everyday and interact with the rest of the community and the campaign. The voting is also a side-by-side comparison of two carpets - this makes it impossible for someone to exclusively vote for their entry.
Congratulations to Luna Carpet and D&T for the launch! Upload your own photo and start voting - contest ends December 1st! Check out the Luna Facebook page here!
D&T creates iMonitor Outstanding Ad!
More often than not we are developing the ads in either HTML5 or Objective-C based on assets provided by the advertiser, but there are cases in which we're called to design the creative for the iAd as well. One such case was the Platinum Guild International engagement ring calculator iAd for the new CFG: Cosmo For Guys iPad mag.

The ad calls boyfriends or husbands-to-be to use an interactive calculator to enter their salary, which then brings up a selection of PGI engagement rings within their budget. Our Creative Director Paul designed a sleek iPad experience based on calculator functionality on PGI's website and small flash banner ads, and one of our Senior Web Developers, DeVon, executed it to a "T," working out all the calculator logic and mini galleries of ring selections that drive to the PGI website for further info and purchasing.
We're happy to announce this D&T designed and developed ad has been featured in McPheters & Company's iMonitor Vol. 31 as part of the "Outstanding Ads" section!

Congrats to the D&T team and CFG! Find out more about our iAd work with Hearst here, and check out the CFG: Cosmo For Guys app here.

D&T geeks out at Tech Week!
Geeking out at Tech Week in Chi-town: Tim Daly reports!
The first annual Tech Week convention rocked the Windy City this weekend, and it was an event that Dom & Tom wasn't about to miss!
Members of the D&T Chicago office "The Forge" headed over to Chicago's Merchandise Mart to participate in the convention, which featured keynote addresses, workshops, and panel discussions about the latest in technology and entrepreneurship in Chicago.
From their website: Chicago is a new type of technology hub. That vision inspired TechWeek, with over 2000 entrepreneurs, business leaders, and innovators, 4 days of conference sessions, over international 150 speakers, 4 days of an expo hall with over 100 exhibitors, 35 competing tech startups, and over 30 independent off-site events. TechWeek connects the newest web and mobile technologies to thousands of Chicago business, academic, community, art, and media professionals- all within one week. Welcome to the new culture of connectivity.
Major speakers included:
- Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer of the United States and Presidential appointee
- J. B. Pritzker, Founder of New World Ventures, philanthropist and venture capitalist extraordinaire
- Craig Newmark, Founder of Craigslist
- Chicago's own Matt Moog, CEO & founder of Viewpoints Network (www.viewpoints.com) and Built In Chicago (builtinchicago.org)
As you can tell, the event was amazing, and we all had a blast! The panels were fun and enlightening, and the expo and presentations highlighted some great new products and ideas.
Once again, it just goes to show that when it comes to innovation in technology, Chicago is the new place to be, and Dom & Tom will always aim to keep our company at the cutting edge!
D&T brings mobile design classes to Chicago!

This past week, Dom & Tom proudly completed its first official foray into the world of teaching in Chicago!
D&T Creative Director Paul Petrowsky and Helper Monkey/Account Executive Tim Daly co-taught an iOS Design class for Chicago's professional design community. Hosted by Digital Bootcamp, and drawing on Paul's extensive knowledge of iOS design principles, the class highlighted the Apple Human Interface Guidelines from both a technical design perspective and a UI/UX perspective.
Topics covered included:
- Standard GUI Elements: Introduction to and in-depth look at the purpose, placement, and best practices behind the GUI elements that iOS users see every day!
- iPhone vs iPad: Discussion about how to design for not only two different device sizes, but for two unique user interfaces and user experiences. Design your app to pop no matter what iOS device your customer is using!
- What's Hot: A design- and user experience-oriented discussion of some of the most popular apps in the iTunes store, as well as a sneak peek at some D&T originals!
- App Icon Creation: First impressions are important, and a good icon is better than a handshake and a smile! Learn how to create an eye-catching icon that will entice users and also conform to Apple's best practices guidelines.
So that settles it, Chicago... Dom & Tom is here to stay! We had a lot of fun and met some amazing new people - stay tuned for details on future classes, and big thanks to all who came out.

Presenting some of our latest projects

We worked with Dead As We Know It to create a Flash site for one of Proximo Spirits' beverages, Agavero Tequila. The site includes nifty Flash animation effects and transitions, slideshow-like drink recipe sections for Original and Orange Agavero Tequilas, and a Google Maps Agavero locator.

We originally worked with Monday Collective to build them a Flash site, and were happy to oblige when they asked us to update it to HTML. We built it in Wordpress with custom templates and integrated their blog right into their site.

We worked with Half Fiction to build a custom Facebook experience for Xmatters including 4 tabs featuring links driving to their website and a media page with embedded YouTube videos.
We'd also like to mention... LOOK OUT FOR ZOMBIES! COMING SOON TO iPHONE AND D&T LABS!

Don't say we didn't warn you...
And finally, it wouldn't be polite for us to mention the zombie apocalypse without extending a warm welcome (...and a warning) to our new team members in NY & Chicago - HEY GUYS!
